In 2008, Kenya faced significant turmoil following its election, leading to widespread violence and leaving many children orphaned. In response, Dominican priests in Kisumu established Fr. Tom’s Kids, a shelter to support these children. Over time, the initiative expanded, receiving donations that enabled the purchase of land for Our Lady of Grace school.
Our Lady of Grace quickly became more than just a school; it became a beacon of hope for both orphans and impoverished children seeking quality education. In 2010, Sister Jane Meyer visited to assist in teacher training, resulting in the school’s operational status by that summer. Sister Jane later shared her experiences at St. Agnes Academy in Houston, prompting the involvement of Partners in Mission, which has maintained a close relationship with Our Lady of Grace since then.
The partnership’s first project involved establishing two water wells on the school property. With additional support from Saint Basil Coffee, Our Lady of Grace has been able to rebuild classrooms, purchase books and uniforms, install playground equipment, and construct walkways, all enhancing the learning environment. While St. Agnes Academy used to send students to assist with supply distribution and other needs, this tradition paused due to Covid-19 but is eagerly anticipated to resume.
Despite the challenges stemming from political upheaval, Our Lady of Grace school remains steadfast in its mission to provide a haven for its students. Through ongoing support from Partners in Mission and contributions from Saint Basil Coffee, the school continues to enhance its infrastructure and provide a quality education for all its students.
