Saint Basil Coffee Reaches a Major Milestone Working for Social Justice
Houston, TX (Jan. 15, 2017) Saint Basil Coffee is excited to announce that it has recently surpassed a major milestone – that is, one-half million dollars ($500,000) in contributions to Catholic missions. These contributions have helped, and are continuing to help, the missions to provide our brothers and sisters most in need the opportunity to lift themselves and their families out of poverty – this through education, job skills training and humanitarian assistance. This is Social Justice in action and is making a difference in the lives of thousands.
How it all began …
Saint Basil Coffee came into being in 2005 in response to Pope John Paul II’s “Call to Social Justice” and more specifically, in response to a request from Fr Vince Thompson, a priest in the Congregation of St Basil, to provide much needed financial support to the Basilian missions, particularly those in Colombia. Pope John Paul II’s Call to Social Justice and the work of the Basilian Missions fit “hand in hand” – that is to provide those most in need the opportunity to rise out of poverty.
Who is Saint Basil Coffee …
Saint Basil Coffee is a non-profit 501 (C) (3). It is an “all-volunteer” organization – there are no paid employees. It has no assets or real property – it uses offices and equipment provided by supporters to Saint Basil Coffee at no cost. Saint Basil Coffee’s expenses are for its coffee – the purchase of coffee beans and the roasting and packaging of the coffee, together with a small amount for marketing. And what sets Saint Basil Coffee apart is that its money is given away – all proceeds go to Basilian and other select Catholic missions who work with those most in need.
The coffee …
Saint Basil coffee is “Fair Trade” coffee. The coffee beans used to make Saint Basil coffee are purchased from small, independent coffee growers – giving them the opportunity to stay in business and to provide for their family. Saint Basil coffee is made from top quality organic Arabica coffee beans grown in the mountains of Colombia and is “great tasting” with a robust aroma and flavor. And Saint Basil coffee is the freshest coffee around – Saint Basil coffee is roasted and packaged only after an order is in hand.
But, it really is more than about the coffee – it’s about helping to care for those most in need through the sale of Saint Basil coffee.
What is being done – How are the proceeds from the sale of Saint Basil coffee used …
The proceeds from the sale of Saint Basil coffee are used by our Basilian and other select Catholic missions to:
- Provide an education to children who otherwise would not be able to attend school!
- Provide job skills training to adults so that they can gain meaningful employment!
- Provide medical care to children and families who otherwise would not receive such care!
- Provide meals to children and elderly who otherwise would go hungry!
- Provide other humanitarian assistance to those most in need after disasters!
This is social justice in action! Providing those in greatest need the opportunity to lift themselves and their families out of poverty.
